“But he has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in your weakness.’”  2 Corinthians 12:9 These words are words that I am meditating on at the moment. I want them to wash over me and cover my life. I want the attitude of Paul in this passage - to be able to rejoice in my weaknesses, hardships and difficulties so that Christ may be...

Oh the joys of second language learning...
So, I have a funny story for all y’all.  Yesterday Michael, Maya and I went to the beach with one of our doctors from last week, Dany. We went to Playa Durada on the north coast of the country. It’s a very popular tourist destination but we went to a spot further down on the beach that was less crowded and has cheaper food, drinks, etc. than the beach directly in front of the resorts....

¡Ay Padre! ¡No hay nada!
Oh my goodness. How do I even begin to describe this past week?! For starters, I arrived home from a weeklong stay in ”el campo” (the country). Myself and two of the others in my program lived in a rural clinic for the week, working with doctors and nurses there to better understand how the health system works here and learn about the campo life which greatly contrasts the busy city...

Un viernes para recordar... (A Friday to Remember)
This past Friday was incredible. We met up at 8AM at the university for an outing not completely sure what to expect. We had been told that later that day we would be visiting Bateys in the North Coast but had nearly no idea what the morning would hold. After a two hour ride in the guagua (Dominican for bus), we arrived at Transformation House Children’s Hospital in Cabarete. This is...

I am studying at la Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra which is called for short Pu-ca-my-ma. It is one of the primer universities in the country and had about 30,000 undergraduate students. I live in a...

He Who Feeds the Ravens
In Luke 12, Jesus uses the example of the ravens saying, “… do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds?” ...

A Dream Come True
If you’ve been around me at all anytime in the past few weeks, you’ve no doubt heard me excitedly exclaim, “I got in! I’m going back to Haiti then I’m going the the Dominican Republic!” Since the time I found out about this study abroad program back in September, I have been bubbling over with anticipation. It is literally a dream come true for several reasons: ...
